MCJPA has been clear from the beginning: We must shift the power over law enforcement into the hands of the community. Anything that doesn't achieve that is insufficient.
Now, the Maryland House and Senate have passed different versions of a police reform package. Both contain different improvements, like a statewide use of force standards and greater transparency in police misconduct investigations. However, neither enable the possibility of real community oversight, which is different from the elements of community participation that they did include. Meanwhile, we continue to push for local control of the Baltimore City Police Department and to remove police from our children’s schools.
Where do we go from here? Tune in to our Townhall to hear the latest news and how you can support ongoing work to reimagine policing in Maryland.
You will hear from MCJPA Cosponsors, including Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, ACLU of Maryland, CASA, Jews United for Justice, NAACP, Progressive Maryland, Community Justice, and many more. There will also be an opportunity towards the end for the audience to ask questions.
The event will be hosted on Zoom and live-streaming via MCJPA and partner social media. Zoom link will be provided after you RSVP.
